Sacramento County Sheriff's Department Police Department

As a result of an unwitnessed officer fatality, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department decided to invest in a mobile digital video system that would enable them to capture evidence and protect officers in the field. The department outfitted all 260 sheriff vehicles with the Toughbook Arbitrator, giving officers increased security, eye-witness corroboration and peace of mind. Using cutting edge technology, the Toughbook Arbitrator 360° automatically records video during traffic stops and high-speed chases. Sacramento County also employs the Arbitrator's wireless microphone, which clips to the officer's belt and records sound up to a distance of 1000 feet from the squad car. Once the incident is captured, the footage is automatically uploaded to a secure server, making the recordings secure and tamper-proof while ensuring the submission of reliable courtroom evidence.

Tulsa Police Department Case Study

The Tulsa Police Dept. faced three simultaneous challenges: equip its officers with ultra-portable computers, jumpstart an e-ticketing project and upgrade their slow wireless network to maximize productivity and provide consistent Internet access for officers across the city. After an extensive testing period, it became clear to Tulsa PD that Panasonic Solutions Company and Sprint offered the best solution for their needs.

Panasonic and Sprint helped Tulsa PD find the right technologies for their specific requirements, centered around two complementary products - the Panasonic Toughbook U1 and the Permanent Display Removable Computer (PDRC) - as an in- and out-of-vehicle computing solution. The Toughbook U1 is an extremely rugged handheld computer with a 5.6" sunlight-viewable touchscreen and full keyboard. The U1 seamlessly connects to the PDRC, which combines a vehicle-mounted display and full-functioning keyboard for heightened capabilities inside police vehicles. The U1's embedded wireless technology accesses the Sprint 3G network, providing a strong signal for officers to obtain images, file reports and utilize eCitation software from regions that used to be dead zones.

RoHS Compliance

Toughbook mobile computers comply with regulations that restrict the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment sold in European markets. The European Unions Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive bans lead and five other hazardous substances from manufacturing processes. For manufacturers of electronic equipment, the main impact of RoHS is that only lead-free products can be sold in Europe. Panasonic has therefore shifted to lead-free solder.
